Mukesh Kumar, a paralympic international table tennis player from Chandigarh, has returned the Presidential Medal, in support of the farmers’ agitation. He was awarded the medal in 2004, by the then President of India, along with ₹20,000 cash prize for saving the life of a child on the railway tracks. In the accident, he had lost his own leg.
Mukesh Kumar, who originally hails from Bhiwani, will now take his sugarcane trolley to the protest to organise a langar for the farmers. He says that if the government does not listen to the voice of the farmers, then in the coming time, he will also return the awards he received for sports.
Many years ago, Mukesh Kumar was waiting for a train at the railway station to take part in a table tennis competition. Suddenly, he fell onto the track while rescuing a child and had to lose his leg. Despite this, he did not give up hope and started participating in table tennis competitions. Today, he is bringing laurels to the country by participating in national and international competitions.
Kumar has many awards under his belt. He has won 14 gold medals, 8 silver medals and 7 bronze medals at the national level and 6 gold, 10 silver, 14 bronze medals at the international level.
