In a bid to resolve long-standing sewer and stormwater pipeline issues in Mohali, MLA Kulwant Singh inaugurated a Rs 2.62-crore infrastructure project on Friday. The comprehensive program involves the construction and maintenance of new and existing sewage lines, with work commencing in Phase 4 near the Kalgidhar Sahib Gurdwara.
The project is intended to alleviate significant drainage issues that have afflicted several areas of the city. In Phase 4, about 365 metres of additional sewer pipe will be installed to improve the overall sewage management system. Singh also initiated a targeted project to install a 135-meter sewage line along the dividing road between Phases 3B1 and 3B2, to help the area’s businesses and commercial establishments.
The decision to undertake this project follows a series of complaints about sewage entering the Lakhnaur Choe through the stormwater system, caused by damaged pipelines and malfunctioning sewer lines. According to Singh, a comprehensive assessment undertaken by the Department of Water Supply and Sanitation found that damaged sewage pipes and inappropriate residential connections to the stormwater system were the major causes of the problem. Following this study, the project was properly designed and is presently progressing.
Singh also announced intentions to repair storm pipelines in other locations, such as Phases 3B1, 3B2, 4, 5, and 7, Sectors 70 and 71, and Mataur village. The ultimate objective is to redirect sewage water from these communities to the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), preventing contamination of the Lakhnaur Choe.
Singh told Mohali residents that the state government is dedicated to upgrading the city’s infrastructure. He emphasised current projects, including security camera installation, roundabout building, and road widening measures. He emphasised that these initiatives are intended to improve safety and provide significant relief to local inhabitants.
