New Delhi
The website of the Union Ministry of Defence appeared to have been hacked Friday, its home page reduced to a white page with minimal text – including a Chinese character and an error message.
The character, which mean chan – or Zen, as in Zen Buddhism – formed a hyperlink that redirected visitors to the same page. (See screenshot below)
As of 5:17 pm, the website (www.mod.gov.in) was still down.
Minutes after reports of the hack were published, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said action had been initiated.
“The website shall be restored shortly. Needless to say, every possible step required to prevent any such eventuality in the future will be taken,” she said.
