The picture of the famous Matka Chowk is about to get changed as it being given a facelift. Now, a flying flock of birds will be visible on this square, which has been designed by a Mumbai-based company after the approval of Chandigarh Administration. It is expected that the project will be completed in a year.
The expenditure on this project is being borne by businessman Sandeep Goyal, a student of St John’s High School. Chandigarh administration has entrusted the maintenance of Matka Chowk to the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB).
Features of the new design of Matka Chowk
– A flying flock of birds will be visible from a distance, which will give the message of unity
– The idea came from migratory birds that visit the Sukhna Lake
– Steel rods of height ranging from 3 feet to 18 feet will be used
– Each rod will have a spring to reduce the air pressure
– Lights will be used to that will illuminate Matka Chowk at night
The lockdown due to Covid delayed the project. The effort to revamp the Chowk has been going on for a year-and-a-half. A proposal was made to the CHB on behalf of Sandeep Goyal, which was sent to Chandigarh administration. Many objections were raised by the Chandigarh Heritage Committee and the new design of Matka Chowk was completed about a year ago. A model of this has also been kept at the Le Corbusier Centre, Sector-19.

Also, a map of the city is being built in front of Neelam Theatre in Sector 17. This map is being prepared from concrete, steel, granite stone and expensive marble and the cost ₹90 lakh. It will be 40 meters long and 40 meters wide. The map of the city being built will be visible at night too as special lighting is being arranged for it. The administration is developing Sector-17 as a tourist destination. Major sites of the city such as Sukhna Lake, Rock Garden, Rose Garden, High Court, The Capital Complex, Art Museum and other sites will be designed with special granite stone.
