Lowest number of dengue cases witnessed in 2020

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, mosquito-borne diseases have witnessed a declined according to government data. Lowest number of dengue, malaria and chikungunya cases were reported in 2020 compared to last six years.

According to the Health Department, only 13 cases of dengue and only six cases of malaria have been recorded till August this year, whereas last year there were around 286 cases of dengue.

The Health Department claims that even during the pandemic, their team constantly monitored breeding areas responsible for diseases and spread awareness among residents.

Dengue, malaria and chikungunya season lasts from August to last week of October. Hence, an accurate assessment will be done after October.

Less rain in September

This time, lowest rainfall was recorded in September in 44 years. Due to the lack of rain, water cannot accumulate.

According to experts, even if there are less cases, people should take precautions, such as:

  • Wear long-sleeves and long pants to cover your arms and legs.
  • Apply mosquito repellent
  • Use mosquito nets while sleeping.
  • Keep your house clean and tidy.
  • Do not leave stagnant water anywhere in or around the house.
  • Change your hand towels after a day’s use.

Dengue fever symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Intense headache
  • Body aches
  • Joint pains
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting,
  • Skin rashes and
  • Mucosal bleeding
