In reaction to the savage rape and murder of a trainee women doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a 24-hour countrywide strike beginning at 6 a.m. on Saturday, August 17. Key Demands by the IMA:
Overhaul of Working and Living Conditions: The IMA demands an entire revamping of the habits and habitats of the house surgeons. This entails tackling long work hours like the 36 hours in which the victim was on duty and offering safe havens for doctors to rejuvenate themselves.
Strengthening Legislation: According to the IMA, there is a need to pass a complete law prohibiting violence against healthcare workers. They propose amending the Hospital Protection Bill of 2019 by including some amendments from the 2023 Epidemic Diseases Act. The IMA believes that an ordinance like the one promulgated during the COVID-19 epidemic would help at present.
Professional Investigation and Justice: The association is calling for a meticulous and timely investigation of the crime, ensuring that justice is served. They also demand the identification and punishment of those responsible for the vandalism that occurred at RG Kar Hospital on the night of August 14.
Enhanced Security in Hospitals: The IMA insists that hospital security should be on par with airport protocols. They are advocating for hospitals to be declared safe zones, with mandatory security measures such as CCTV surveillance and the deployment of security personnel.
Compensation for the Victim’s Family: The IMA is seeking appropriate and dignified compensation for the victim’s family, in recognition of the cruelty and tragedy they have endured.
