Justice UU Lalit, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, was on Saturday sworn-in as the 49th Chief Justice of India.
President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice Lalit at a brief ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhawan at 10.30 am. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, outgoing CJI NV Ramana, sitting and former judges of the Supreme Court, union ministers, senior lawyers and various other dignitaries from the field of law and politics.Outgoing CJI Ramana had on August 3 recommended to the Centre to appoint Justice Lalit — the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court — as his successor and the next CJI. Justice Ramana – who took over as the 48th CJI on April 24, 2021 –retired on August 26 at the age of 65.
