A rapid operation by the Jalandhar police resulted in the apprehension of three people who pretended to be CIA officers in order to swindle Shahkot’s locals. The arrested individuals, Raja Singh, Devinder Singh, and Harjinder Singh, all live in Kapurthala district. They purportedly defrauded Navneet Arora from 12,000 rupees
The incident came to light on June 27th when Arora, who works at the Dana Mandi market in Shahkot, approached the Shahkot police station to report the crime. According to Arora’s complaint, three men approached him while he was working, claiming to be officials from the Kapurthala CIA unit. They falsely accused him of engaging in illegal activities at his residence and threatened to conduct a raid.
Panicked by the accusation, Arora denied any wrongdoing. However, the imposters, who addressed each other as Raja, Devinder, and Harjinder, insisted they had concrete information and demanded Rs 50,000 to avoid further action. Fearing repercussions, Arora initially handed them Rs 4,000. Unsatisfied with the amount, the trio pressured Arora into giving them an additional Rs 8,000 from his home.
The fake officers further threatened Arora with false charges if he reported the incident. The Shahkot police led by Station House Officer (SHO) Aman Saini investigated after the complaint. The accused were identified and arrested by the police’ fast action. The extorted money and the vehicle used by the imposters were also recovered.
The arrested individuals have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 384 (punishment for extortion), 419 (cheating by personation), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) at the Shahkot police station.
This incident underscores the necessity for proper public knowledge about these fraud scams; it’s wise not to trust those who claim they are cops rather than asking them for an ID card then contacting necessary people to confirm their originality, as this could happen at any time. The best thing one could do when he finds himself in such situation is not to hesitate reporting this incident to the relevant law enforcement agency without any delay.
