The Mumbai Indians bowlers, led by Markande, almost pull it off
Mayank Markande bowled a superb spell of leg-spin for a four-wicket haul. However, it was not enough — just like the Mumbai Indians total — to stop Sunrisers Hyderabad from recording a thrilling one-wicket wicket win in the Vivo Indian Premier League match at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium here on Thursday.
This, despite the top-order, with the exception of opener Shikhar Dhawan, coming a cropper.
Double blows
With Jasprit Bumrah and left-armer Mustafizur Rahman striking a double blow each in the 18th and 19th overs, Mumbai eyed a possible win.
But, with 11 needed in the last over, Deepak Hooda essayed a stunning inside-out six off Ben Cutting’s first ball to ease the pressure. Billy Stanlake hit the winning run after the team required one off the last ball.
Brilliant bowling
Earlier, it was another brilliant bowling performance by the home team, even without its star speedster Bhuvneshwar Kumar who sat out with a sore shoulder and made way for Sandeep Sharma.
Mumbai Indians, put in, struggled right through except when Kieron Pollard looked good for a while.
The pace trio of Siddharth Kaul, Sandeep and Stanlake (though expensive) struck at regular intervals to choke the visitors’ batting line-up.
And compounding its woes was the impressive spell by leggie Rashid Khan, who conceded just 13 runs from four overs besides dismissing Cutting cheaply.
At the halfway stage, Mumbai was on the backfoot at 78 for four.
Once Pollard too was dismissed in the 15th over by Stanlake, failing to check an ambitious lofted drive, there was not much contribution from the rest.
