Internet Suspended in Udaipur After Communal Clashes Erupt

Udaipur, Rajasthan, saw a massive security clampdown on Friday, August 17, 2024, when internet connections were banned for 24 hours due to violent communal confrontations. The rioting began after a knife assault at a local government school.

Incident Details:

The assault began when a fellow student reportedly stabbed a Class 10 student in the morning. The victim sustained grave injuries and was rushed to the hospital. As per Arvind Poswal, Udaipur District Collector, both the assailant and his father have been arrested.

Escalation and Response

The initial altercation led to protests by members of certain Hindu groups, which quickly turned violent. Demonstrators clashed with authorities, resulting in stone-pelting, vehicle fires, and property damage across key areas of Udaipur, including Bapu Bazar and Ghanta Ghar. Several shops and a shopping mall were vandalized, and hundreds gathered outside the government hospital before being dispersed by police.

Authorities’ Measures

In reaction to the turmoil, the local authorities issued prohibitory measures to prevent additional meetings and deployed large police units around the city. Senior authorities, such as Divisional Commissioner Rajendra Bhatt and Collector Arvind Poswal, have been actively involved in handling the issue.

Authorities are advising citizens to remain calm and avoid spreading rumours. The police are still on high alert, striving to ensure that the situation does not worsen.
