India Thump Zimbabwe by 100 Runs, Series Levelled at 1-1

On Sunday, July 7, 2024, India came out on top in the second T20 International of the five-match series, crushing Zimbabwe by 100 runs at the Harare Sports Club. With this, they had tied the series after Zimbabwe’s unexpected win in their opening clash.

Upon winning the toss India chose to bat, India was able to make an incredible 234/2. It was the young Indian batting line that came to the fore. Opening batsman Abhishek Sharma put up a stunning 100 (47) in his first T20 International 100, striking seven fours and eight sixes en route. For the second wicket, the pair combined with an unbroken 153-run partnership while Ruturaj Gaikwad was invaluable with 77 not out from 47 balls. At the top, debutant Sai Sudharsan also contributed with a quick 18.

Blessing Muzarabani (1/42) was the only bowler for Zimbabwe who appeared to be in control of the game. Tanaka Chivanga (0/53) and Richard Ngarava (0/48) were very pricey.

Under duress, Zimbabwe’s batting collapsed as they chased an impossible score. Pacer Mukesh Kumar, making his debut, dismissed openers Innocent Kaia (0) and Brian Bennett (26) cheaply (3/37). Luke Jongwe (33) and Wessly Madhevere (43) provided some fight, but as the Indian bowlers tightened their hold, wickets dropped often. Ravi Bishnoi (2/11) and Avesh Khan (3/15) both had outstanding performances, taking important wickets. In 18.4 overs, Zimbabwe was finally bowled out for a pitiful 134 runs.

India’s win forms a significant turnaround from a low point they experienced when they lost their first game. The exciting talent among Indian young batters and a great variety of bowling skills are what characterized this match. The series for the third T20I will be equalled out and will be held this Wednesday at the same ground

Key Performers:

  • India: Abhishek Sharma (100 runs), Ruturaj Gaikwad (77 runs), Mukesh Kumar (3/37), Avesh Khan (3/15)
  • Zimbabwe: Wessly Madhevere (43 runs), Luke Jongwe (33 runs)

Looking Ahead:

At 1-1 in the series, the prospects are balanced for either team. India will try to capitalize on this situation by going ahead in the 3rd T20I. Conversely, Zimbabwe must re-strategize to stop India’s explosive batting and powerful bowling combination.
