India edged past Zimbabwe by 23 runs in a nail-biting third T20I at the Harare Sports Club on Wednesday, grabbing a crucial 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
Shubman Gill played his part that developed into a 50-run partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad before falling on his 49. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal was able to put on a quite good performance before Washington Sundar’s knock enabled them to post a respectable 182/4. Blessing Muzarabani finished with returns of two for 38, whilst Sikandar Raza managed two for 24 from their 4-over spells in the Zimbabwe innings.
Zimbabwe started their chase positively with openers Craig Ervine and Wessly Madhevere putting on a 38-run stand. However, the introduction of spin proved decisive. Washington Sundar troubled the batsmen as an off-spinner as he took three important wickets cheaply. Sundar got ferocious support from Avesh Khan (2/29) and Khaleel Ahmed (1/27), who also bowled well to prevent many runs from Zimbabweans and took important batsmen. With the help of Dion Myers’ courageous fifty (65*), Zimbabwe only got 159/6 for the allotted 20 overs so they lost the game.
Openers Deliver for India
The Indian openers, under pressure after a shaky series start, finally delivered. Gill, in particular, looked in top form, finding the boundary with ease. Gaikwad continued his recent resurgence, playing some elegant shots to contribute significantly. Their 92-run partnership provided the perfect platform for a strong total.
Sundar Spins India to Victory
Washington Sundar’s bowling emerged as the turning point for India. His accurate off-spin deliveries bamboozled the Zimbabwean batsmen, breaking their chase momentum. Avesh Khan and Khaleel Ahmed provided excellent support, keeping the scoring rate in check and ensuring India maintained control throughout the chase.
Series Set for a Grand Finale
With India leading 2-1, the series hangs tantalizingly in the balance. The next two matches in Harare present a golden opportunity for both teams. Zimbabwe will be fervently trying to rally and tie the series, while India will be looking to take the series outright. As both sides compete for the win, the next games should provide entertaining cricket.
