In a 1st, Haryana govt begins production of jaggery, sugar in cooperative sugar mills

In view of the increasing demand for jaggery and sugar, the Haryana government has started production of these in cooperative sugar mills for the first time. Co-operative sugar mill Meham is the first to start production and sale of jaggery and sugar. Production in the cooperative sugar mills of Kaithal and Palwal will also start this week.

Cooperative Minister Dr Banwari Lal said, “Each sugar mill will produce around 100 to 150 quintals each day. The plain and spiced jaggery will be made available for sale in a packing ranging from one kilogram to ten kilograms. Spiced jaggery will contain ingredients such as cardamom, fennel, black pepper, peanuts and desi coconut.”

He informed that this project started on a pilot basis to reduce the losses of cooperative sugar mills and help them earn profits. “The people of the state would also benefit from the availability of good quality natural alternatives in place of sugar. If the project receives a good response, the production would also be started in other cooperative sugar mills.”
