IMD Issues Yellow Alert as Chandigarh Braces for Intense Heatwave

In the next few days they will have to endure high temperatures according to the Indian Meteorological Department who announced that this weekend Chandigarh will have 45°C.. IMD also warned about a heatwave expected from 16th-18th May through their yellow alert issued towards the same.

If the maximum temperature exceeds 40°C and rises at least 4.5 degrees above normal with a baseline of 45°C may trigger a heatwave in Chandigarh.Officials have cautioned against engaging in strenuous outdoor activities and performing certain rituals in extremely bad weather since they anticipated that there might be possibility of a heat wave.

According to Shivinder Singh, a scientist at IMD Chandigarh, the absence of an active Western Disturbance is contributing to the rising temperatures. Earlier in the month, temperatures remained below normal due to the influence of Western Disturbances occurring almost every weekend. However, with no such weather system currently affecting the region, Chandigarh residents can expect a gradual increase in temperatures.

Current weather forecast shows temperatures between 41°C and 44°C in the city for the next few days. The issuance of a yellow warning for heatwave signifies the need for preparedness among residents, with the alert potentially escalating to an orange alert if heatwave conditions persist. Singh emphasized that relief from the scorching temperatures is unlikely beyond May 18, unless there is intervention from a Western Disturbance.
