Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) recently made a vital decision of assembling prestigious Range Rover in the Pune plant, India. This will be for the first time these cars are manufactured outside UK where they have been produced exclusively over half century.
The locally assembled Range Rovers are expected to be significantly cheaper, with prices dropping by 18-22%, translating to a range of Rs 1.40 crore to Rs 2.60 crore depending on the model. Deliveries for the Range Rover Sport are expected to begin as early as August 2024.
JLR’s growing confidence in India’s market in general to the point where luxuries car have a huge demand informs this move. According Tata Group’s chairperson N Chandrasekaran, it makes him feel good to see an increase in access for a majority of Indians. In Agreement with those sentiments was Mr. Rajan Amba who is MD at JLR India, said it was great news because more people can now afford such high-end vehicles.
The local production is also driven by India’s evolving premium car market. This shift allows JLR to benefit from India’s duty structure, leading to the significant price reduction. Notably, JLR India witnessed an impressive 81% increase in retail sales last year, signifying the potential for further growth.
JLR aims to double its business in India within the next three years. Their strategy involves introducing innovative products, leveraging synergies within the Tata Group, and offering cutting-edge technology in the Indian market. While these Range Rovers remain premium vehicles, the adjusted price range aims to cater to a wider audience aspiring to own a piece of the Range Rover legacy.
This development is expected to shorten waiting periods for these popular SUVs. The latest additions to the lineup at JLR India’s shared Pune factory with Tata Motors bring the number of models produced there up to six – three from each brand. These are the Range Rover Velar and Evoque, Jaguar F-PACE, and Discovery Sport.

JLR’s Chief Commercial Officer, Lennard Hoornik, believes India’s consistent growth presents a significant opportunity for localizing production. He views the local manufacturing of Range Rover as a crucial step in solidifying their position as the leading provider of modern luxury SUVs.
Range Rover MD, Geraldine Ingham, acknowledged the surging demand in India, and this local production is a strategic response to meet those growing needs. JLR’s current production capacity at the Pune plant sits around 10,000 units annually. This shift towards local assembly positions JLR to tap into the burgeoning Indian luxury car market while offering their coveted Range Rover models at a more accessible price point.
