Host bowlers search early wickets; Asalanka, Nissanka eye partnership

India’s Shami and Ashwin opened the attack as Nissanka and Asalanka eye a steady partnership on the third day at Mohali. Earlier, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja pulverised the Sri Lankan bowling to amass his career-best score in Test cricket before India declared their innings on 574-8 in Virat Kohli’s 100th game. Jadeja put on a stand of 130 with overnight partner Ashwin, who made 61, to help India notch up a hefty total on the scoreboard. He recorded his second Test century before lunch, surpassing his previous best of 100 not out. Rishabh Pant had headlined the opening day by scoring an entertaining 96. In reply, Sri Lanka were in trouble at 108 for four at stumps, needing another 267 runs to avoid the follow-on. Ashwin took two wickets while fellow spinner Jadeja and pacer Jasprit Bumrah claimed one each. Bumrah the wicket of Angelo Mathews for 22 and Ashwin got de Silva for one as Sri Lanka slipped to 103 for four in the third and final session.
