High Court Bar Association President Vikas Malik Arrested in Assault Case

On Friday, the Chandigarh Police surprisingly arrested Vikas Malik, the president of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association. This happened just two days after the Punjab and Haryana Bar Council suspended his license after violent claims made against another attorney.

The Chandigarh Police Station’s Sector 3 filed a First Information Report (FIR) on July 1st, which led to Malik’s detention. provisions 351, 506, and 186 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) are among the provisions under which the FIR describes the allegations, along with other sections about assault, criminal intimidation, and interference with a public official. The alleged assault involved another advocate, Ranjit Singh.

Malik’s arrest and license suspension marks a significant development in the ongoing case. The Bar Council, upon suspending his license, expressed strong condemnation of his actions. The council’s committee noted Malik’s alleged attempt to tamper with evidence by removing a hard disk/DVR from the Bar Association office premises. This act, according to the committee, “clearly shows the intention and attempt on the part of Respondent No. 1 (Malik) to destroy the evidence.”

The matter has clouded the Bar Association’s reputation and sparked questions about the president’s behaviour. Now that Malik is being sued, attention is being directed toward the inquiry and any repercussions for his purported behaviour. Both the public and the legal community will be keenly observing the case’s result.
