In a surprising incident, Vikas Malik, the president of HCBA (High Court Bar Association) in Punjab as well as Haryana, has been alleged to have assaulted an advocate within the premises of the High Court Complex. Ranjeet Singh, the alleged victim, claims that the assault was meant to prevent him from being served with a court summons leading him to end up with a broken rib.
According to Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Karan Singh, investigating the case, the incident unfolded when Ranjeet Singh, accompanied by a court clerk, went to serve summons related to a writ petition. Upon reaching the designated location, they were allegedly met with aggression from Malik and his associates.
Singh was subsequently taken to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital Sector 16 for treatment. In his statement to the police, he claimed Vikas Malik and his associates specifically targeted him to prevent the service of the summons, which he believes is linked to a writ petition challenging Malik’s presidency.
The FIR lodged against Malik and his associates includes sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) alongside sections 191(2), 190, 126(2), 115(2), and 351(2,3) of the BNS
Malik, however, vehemently denies the allegations. He maintains complete ignorance of the incident and asserts that no violence occurred on the court premises. He further accuses Singh of falsely implicating him in the case.
This incident has sent shockwaves through the legal community, raising serious concerns about the conduct of a Bar Association leader and the potential for violence within the court complex. The alleged assault targeting a lawyer fulfilling his professional duties is a blatant disregard for the rule of law.
It is crucial to perform a comprehensive and unbiased investigation as the progress of the inquiry permits the truth to be established. However, should the accusations turn to be true, then Malik and his accomplices should be faced with tough measures so that the court remains respected and lawyers continue carrying out their duties under no threat.
This incident also sheds light on the internal disputes within the HCBA, with the alleged assault potentially stemming from the writ petition challenging Malik’s leadership. It is important to maintain professionalism and address such disputes through legitimate legal channels.
