Govt Forms Panel After Arrest of Two Sassoon Hospital Doctors

A three-member committee has been constituted by the Maharashtra government for the investigation of Porsche car accident, after two doctors and a staff member of Sassoon General Hospital have been detained.

On Monday, Rajiv Nivatkar, the Commissioner of Medical Education, issued an official order according to which a new committee chaired by Dr. Pallavi Sapale. Dr. Pallavi Sapale who is also serving as the dean at Grant Medical College and J J Group of Hospitals will be established. The other appointed members include Dr. Gajanan Chavan, a professor in the forensic medicine department at Grant Medical College, and Dr. Sudhir Chowdhary, a Special Duty Officer at Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar Government Medical College and Super Speciality Hospital.

The committee has been tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged manipulation of the juvenile driver’s blood sample. According to the police, the sample was reportedly destroyed and replaced under the direction of the alleged medical professionals.

The incident involving a 17-year-old who was driving a Porsche car in the streets of Pune crashed into a two wheeler leading to death of two. The mishandling of samples taken after the incident led to detention of Dr. Ajay Taware, who is the head of Forensic Medicine Department at Sassoon Hospital, Dr. Shrihari Halnor as the Chief Medical Officer and Dr. Atul Ghatkamble who works under Dr. Taware. They face charges of manipulating blood samples and destruction of crucial evidence. These actions have sparked concerns about the integrity and ethics of medical professionals involved in legal investigations.

As the inquiry proceeds, the three suspects were remand in police custody until May 30. The establishment of the investigative committee by the government in quick time represents seriousness of the accusations and requirement for transparency and accountability in forensic evidence management.

Dr. Vinayak Kale, Dean of Sassoon General Hospital, has been directed to cooperate fully with the committee’s investigation. The committee is scheduled to visit Pune on Tuesday to commence its probe.
