The Indian government has asked Twitter to remove over a thousand more accounts for allegedly spreading misinformation and provocative content in connection with the farmers’ protest. It has said that the 1,178 listed handles have Pakistani and Khalistani users, official sources have said. The social media site is yet to completely comply with the order, they said.
Earlier, on January 31, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology
had sent a list of 257 handles and tweets to be blocked for similar reasons.
Twitter blocked these accounts for few hours before unilaterally unblocking
them shortly after.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday had said that there was a reason why MEA reacted to the remarks of some celebrities in relation to protest by farmer unions and noted that they spoke “on matters on which they obviously didn’t know very much.”
A few days ago, Twitter global CEO Jack Dorsey had “liked” several tweets made by foreign-based celebrities in support of farmer protests, sources said. In view of this, the platform’s defiance of the government’s order to block the accounts raises several questions.
Moreover, Delhi Police on Friday wrote a letter to Google seeking registration details and activity log of the account through which a “toolkit” related to the farmers’ protest was created and uploaded on the social media platform.

On the other hand, Twitter’s public policy director Mahima Kaul recently resigned from her role, two sources said. A LinkedIn ad showed the company is seeking candidates for the key government relations position.
