The Haryana Government has initiated the process of elevating Gohana sub-division of Sonepat as a new district.
The Tribune has learnt that Additional Chief Secretary, Revenue, Disaster Management and Consolidation Department, Dhanpat Singh has written to Sonepat DC Anshaj Singh asking him to send a detailed proposal in this regard.
If elevated, Gohana will become the 23rd district of Haryana. The last one to be elevated was Charkhi Dadri, which was carved out from Bhiwani by the ML Khattar government in October 2016.
The proposal, however, comes as a surprise as last year, the government had said on the floor of Vidhan Sabha that it did not have any such plans.
Gohana residents had been maintaining that while many other smaller sub-divisions had been elevated as districts, Gohana had been left out.
The government has also sought information on the total population of Sonepat district as per Census-2011, number and names of Assembly segments, sub-divisions, tehsils, blocks and municipalities.
Congress’ Gohana MLA Jagbir Singh Malik, however, claimed the government was not serious. “In reply to my query in Vidhan Sabha before polls, then minister Captain Abhimanyu said they had no plan to make Gohana a district,” Malik said.
