Chennai welcomes PM Modi with black flags; #GoBackModi trends at top on Twitter

Chennai

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Chennai on Thursday morning to inaugurate Defence Expo India 2018, protests erupted in the city even as #GoBackModi continues to trend at the top spot on Twitter.

The protests are being held due to the Centre not having yet constituted the Cauvery Management Board as per the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Cauvery water-sharing dispute. The News Minute reports that multiple political parties have taken to the streets and are set to wave black flags at the PM.

The Prime Minister will not be travelling on the Chennai roads, either. In fact, security arrangements have been made to ensure that he is flown to both the events that he is participating in. he news website TNM also reports that questioning this decision of the PM to not even get on the roads, MDMK chief Vaiko asked, “Aren’t you the bravest, Mr Modi? Why can’t you travel by road? You are going directly into IIT by helicopter and then a wall is broken to let you into Cancer Institute. We have never seen such a cowardly Prime Minister in India. You are a coward. Are we going to shoot you through the black flags? Didn’t Nehru face black flags?”

TNM also reports that a black flag has been hoisted at DMK Chief M Karunanidhi’s Gopalapuram residence and MK Stalin’s residence. Agitators also climbed a giant hoarding at the airport to wave black flags at the PM’s helicopter.
