Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot is all set to collaborate again with director Patty Jenkins for a historical drama scripted by Laeta Kalogridis on legendary Egyptian queen Cleopatra.
Paramount Pictures has won the rights to the project, reportedly beating out other suitors such as Apple, Universal, Warner Bros., and Netflix.
Her casting in the film has launched a debate about the Egyptian ruler’s ancestry and whether the Israeli actress is right for the role.
Making the announcement, Gal Gadot tweeted, “I love embarking on new journeys, I love the excitement of new projects, the thrill of bringing new stories to life. Cleopatra is a story I wanted to tell for a very long time. Can’t be more grateful about this A team.”
The announcement of Gal Gadot drew some criticism, with some railing against the casting of an Israeli as the Queen of Egypt, saying that a woman of colour should have got the role. Many netizens objected because Gadot is Israeli. Gadot and Jenkins are also collaborating on ‘Wonder Woman 1984,’ the superhero sequel that is expected to debut in December.
