Two fresh earthquakes of 5.6 and 5.7 magnitude hit Turkey on Tuesday, a day after three deadly quakes – also felt in Syria, Lebanon, and Israel – rocked the country, having claimed around 5,000 lives so far. The massive 7.8 magnitude quake was followed by dozens of aftershocks. A second major earthquake registering 7.5 on the Richter scale hit central Turkey just a few hours later, causing panic among rescue workers and survivors. In the evening, another quake of magnitude 6.0 hit the area, causing more damage and loss of lives.
An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 struck eastern Turkey on Tuesday, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said. The quake was at a depth of 46 km (28.58 miles), the centre added. Meanwhile, the death toll has reached 4,983.
Meanwhile, India will send two more C-17 Indian Air Force planes to Turkey later this evening with 60 Para Field Hospital and personnel to assist in rescue and relief operations. 101 NDRF rescuers with 5 women personnel, canine squad to help quake-hit Turkey.
Turkey has declared seven days of national mourning after earthquakes jolted southern provinces of the country. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey was shaken by the “biggest disaster” since the 1939 Erzincan earthquake.
