Farmers sit on hunger strike today, Kejriwal to also observe fast to support farmers

Farmer leaders on Monday started their day-long hunger strike against the Central Government’s new farm laws and more people are expected to join the ongoing agitation at Delhi border points.

Harinder Singh Lakhowal, general secretary of Bharti Kisan Union, said that they want to wake up the government. “So, 40 farmer leaders of United Farmers Front will sit on hunger strike today at all borders points between 8am to 5pm, with 25 sitting at Singhu border, 10 at Tikri border and five at UP border,” he said.

Farmers across district headquarters in Punjab and Haryana also started their day-long hunger strike against the new farm laws, saying their protests would continue till the central government repealed the three ‘black laws’.

In view of the nationwide protest, the police have enhanced security in both the states and in Chandigarh.

The farmers also staged protests and sit-ins outside residences and offices of BJP leaders in both the states.

A large group of farmers on Sunday blocked the Delhi-Jaipur national highway when it was stopped by police on the Haryana-Rajasthan border. Delhi chief minister (CM) Arvind Kejriwal is also observing the one-day fast in support of the farmers’ protest. He also urged his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) volunteers, supporters as well as the people of the country to join the farmers’ agitation.
