As Denmark’s goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel was gearing up to save the kick from Harry Kane, an unmistakable green light flashed on his face. Many on social media have speculated it was an England fan in the stadium that was shining the laser in the goalie’s face, which has prompted an outcry.
The incident occurred in the 103rd minute when a green light suddenly flashed on Schmeichel’s face, leaving football fans all over the world confused and angry. Many people took to social media to express their outrage at what they saw as disgraceful behaviour by an English fan during an all-important international match.
Despite the distraction, Schmeichel eventually saved the penalty shot.
The game between England and Denmark came down to the wire, with both teams holding their nerves until a last-minute goal by Harry Kane propelled England to the second Euro 2020 finalist spot.
One viewer said: “I hope the person who was shining a laser pen on Kasper Schmeichel is found and punished. Disgusting behaviour.”
Another added: “Booing the Danish national anthem. Shining a laser pen at Schmeichel as the penalty was taken. Why is that (some) England fans never miss a chance to bring shame on the country?”
A third wrote: “Wait wtf someone was shining a laser on Schmeichel when he was facing the pen nahhh that’s disgusting wtf.”
England had previously defeated Germany 2-0 in the round of the last 16 and then Ukraine a comprehensive 4-0 in the quarter-final to make it through the semi-final match. They will now go on to play the Azzurri (Italy) at Wembley on Sunday in what will almost certainly be a tense affair.
