Elderly Man Killed, Family Injured in Wrong-Side Collision in Chandigarh

Vijay, 82, a man from Mohali, had died tragically and his three family members were injured in a road accident in Chandigarh. They were driving their automobile on the wrong side when they collided head-on with an SUV at the Sports Complex in Sector 51.

The family was returning home after visiting PGIMER, Chandigarh, where Vijay, who is suffering from heart disease, has been receiving treatment. Sandeep Kumar (53), Vijay’s daughter Poonam (51), and Vijay’s granddaughter Ojasvi (23) have all been injured.

On their way back, Ojasvi was picked up by Sandeep, the driver of the Hyundai i20, at MCM DAV College, Sector 36. Poonam and Vijay occupied the back passenger seat, and Ojasvi occupied the front seat. While driving, Vijay slept off.

Sandeep told the police that due to heavy rain, poor visibility led to the accident. When he crashed with an oncoming Toyota Fortuner, he was driving on the wrong side of the road. Even though the airbags in his car had deployed, Vijay sustained serious head injuries due to the sheer force of the incident while sleeping.

Responders arrived in a flash, moving the injured to GMCH, Sector 32, for emergency care. Vijay, regrettably, passed away from his wounds. Poonam was then taken to Shalby Multi-Specialty Hospital in Mohali for expert care after suffering severe injuries.

The police investigation revealed that Sandeep was at fault for driving on the wrong side. Consequently, he was booked under Sections 106, 125, and 281 of the BNS.

In a separate incident on the same night in Mohali, two motorcyclists, Jaspreet Singh, 33, and Sukhwinder Singh, 22, lost their lives after being hit by a speeding, drunk driver in Majat. The car driver fled the scene after arguing with onlookers, as captured in a video. Police have registered a case and launched a manhunt for the accused.
