Chandigarh Education Department is planning to convert six high schools into Senior Secondary Schools from next session, increasing the number of seats to 1,000 for Classs 11 students.
There are a total of 40 government senior secondary schools in Chandigarh, wherein around 12,800 seats are for Class 11. Each year, around 16,000 applications are received for these seats. This creates heat for admission as around 3,000 to 4,000 students are denied admission.
After passing Class 12 from Chandigarh, the path of admission in the colleges of the city becomes easier for a student as they become eligible for 85% quota pool. Apart from Chandigarh, there are no colleges in the surrounding areas. In such a situation, every student wants to study from a Chandigarh school after Class 10.
Education Director Rubinderjit Singh Brar said that despite increasing the seats, many students are not able to get admission. “Viewing this situation, it has been decided to increase the number of senior secondary schools. Out of the six schools, two have been named. These include the names of Raipurkalaan and Maloya School. Only subjects related to arts will be kept in these schools. The decision to increase the seat of science has not been taken yet because the number of laboratories will also have to be increased for this.”
Brar said that girls have difficulty in going to school if they get a distant one due to low marks in class 10. “For this reason, many times parents are not in favour of sending girls to school. Therefore, it is being considered that the girls should get admission in the same school where she has studied up to class 10. For this, 25% quota is being considered.”
