India has been hit hard by persistent deluges with multiple states suffering extreme weather episodes leading to major mortalities and property losses.
Devastating landslides brought on by continuous rains have killed at least 19 people in Kerala’s Wayanad district. In less than four hours, three landslides ripped over the steep slopes around Meppadi, trapping hundreds of people in dread. At present, the current rescue operations are being carried out by two organizations: The Air Force and NDRF. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised that Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister of Kerala, shall receive help from the federal government in every aspect; this includes funds which need to be given to the victims’ family members. Rahul Gandhi, who was once elected MP for Wayanad, paid tribute to those affected by this disaster and called for more coordinated rescue missions.
In Gujarat, the monsoon has also been a major source of worry. Since June 15, the number of fatalities from lightning strikes, drownings, and home collapses has been on the increase because of intense rains. The state emergency operation centre reported that over 14,552 people have been relocated to safer areas. The Meteorological Department has predicted continued heavy rainfall, particularly in districts such as Surat, Navsari, and Vadodara. The extensive damage includes the collapse of buildings and destruction of infrastructure, prompting extensive rescue and relief efforts.
Since June 27, rain-related occurrences in Himachal Pradesh have resulted in 56 deaths and ₹410 crore in financial damages. ₹172 crore in damages have been recorded by the Public Works Department alone, while the Horticulture Department has also been significantly impacted. No fatalities have been linked to landslides or cloudbursts in the area despite the intense rains. A “yellow” alert for heavy rains in many districts has been issued by the Shimla meteorological office, which also advises care owing to the possibility of additional damage.
These incidents demonstrate the harsh effects of India’s monsoon season, which result in extensive damage and the need for extensive rescue and relief efforts. The Indian government and other state organizations are still putting in a lot of effort to help people and lessen the consequences of these natural catastrophes.
