Delhi halts drive for HSRP till further orders

Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot on Tuesday halted the enforcement of compulsory high-security number plates (HSRPs) and colour-coded till further orders.

The decision came after the minister held a meeting to resolve issues faced by vehicle owners in getting the new number plates.

After the meeting, Gahlot directed manufacturers and dealers of high-security number plates not to take new bookings unless a system is put in place to address the problems being faced by vehicle owners.

The transport department had issued a public notice on September 22, asking vehicle owners to get HSRP and colour-coded stickers by October 30.

As per the Motor Vehicles Act and the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, High-Security Number Plates and colour-coded stickers are mandatory for all vehicles. As per the rules, any vehicle caught without HSRP and colour-coded sticker is liable to a fine, ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000.

The meeting was attended by senior officers from transport department, National Informatics Centre (NIC) and other stakeholders such as OEM, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) manufacturers.
