Day after resigning, Murmu appointed as CAG

Girish Chandra Murmu was appointed as the next Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) on Thursday, a day after abruptly resigning as the first Lieutenant-Governor (L-G) of the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir. He will be the 14th CAG of India.

The current CAG, Rajiv Mehrishi, will complete his term on Friday. “Rajiv Mehrishi is turning 65 on August 8. That is why the government was in a hurry to look for a replacement,” said a senior bureaucrat in the cabinet.

Murmu, a 1985-batch Gujarat cadre officer, used to work closely with Prime Minister (PM) Modi when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. After Modi became the PM, Murmu joined the Union Finance Ministry and became Joint Secretary in the expenditure department.
