Covid-19: India records highest spike, no let up in Tricity with 1,000+ cases

The number of new Covid-19 cases in India hit a record daily high on Thursday with over 2 lakh infections, while the active cases surpassed the 14-lakh mark, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

India also reported 1,038 fresh Covid-related fatalities in the last 24 hours, taking the overall death toll to 1,73,123. India currently is the second worst-hit country in the world, with the United States being the worst affected.

Punjab: 3,329 new cases, 63 fatalities

The total number of Covid-19 cases in Punjab surged to 2,82,505 on Wednesday as 3,329 more people tested positive for the virus, while the death toll climbed to 7,672 with 63 new fatalities, according to a medical bulletin.

Mohali reported the maximum fresh cases at 508, followed by 489 in Ludhiana, and 347 in Patiala.

1,000+ cases reported in Tricity

The tricity continued to report 1,000+ cases, with 1,070 people testing positive on Wednesday. Chandigarh reported 421 fresh cases, while 373 surfaced in Mohali district and 276 in Panchkula. Three patients each died in Chandigarh and Mohali, and one succumbed in Panchkula district.

The peak was hit on Monday, with 1,310 cases, while 1,184 were reported on Tuesday.

On the other hand, Bapu Dham Colony, Sector 26 — which was a Covid-19 hotspot in Chandigarh in May last year — has only one active case when the city is witnessing its second peak of coronavirus cases. However, Mani Majra continues to remain a Covid hotspot with over 200 active cases.
