Congress MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, P Chidambaram and Jairam Ramesh, were detained at Vijay Chowk here while they were staging a protest march to President House against inflation. A separate group of Congress leaders marching towards the Prime Minister’s house from the AICC headquarters was also detained.
The Congress had announced a pan-India anti-inflation protest on Friday. Party leaders were detained across state capitals during similar protests.Earlier, Congress president Sonia Gandhi flagged the march from Parliament House. She, however, did not join others in the march to Rashtrapati Bhavan.
All party leaders sported black clothes as a mark of protest against what they described as government failure to curb inflation and acknowledge that price rise is an issue.The Congress had given adjournment notices in both Houses on the issue.Earlier this week, price rise was debated in both the Houses. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharam had said that India is not in any danger of stagflation.The Congress, which participated in the debates, walked out of the Houses protesting what they described as FM’s denial of the inflation problem.
