Actor Jitendra Kumar, fondly known as Jeetu Bhaiya, has lifted the on the quirky world of small-town Indian romances. In a recent interview, the actor shared anecdotes about how peculiar circumstances often lead to unexpected infatuations and lasting attachments. Kumar, whose films often explore this theme, recently shared some of his own amusing experiences with falling in love in unusual circumstances.
In a candid interview with Raj Shamani, the Rajasthani-born actor revealed a childhood crush sparked by an act of classroom discipline. “The teacher scolded the girl very badly for coming late,” Kumar explained. “I felt the teacher was too harsh, and since I was a topper, I thought they wouldn’t have treated me the same way. I feel so sorry for her- iski kitni beizzati ho gyi class mein’(how humiliated she must be feeling). That sympathy turned into a crush within days, a full-blown ‘pyaar’(love) that lasted a long time!”
Kumar attributes these” strange reasons” for crushed to the limited social interaction between boys and girls in many small towns. “When there are few co-educational schools and boys and girls are kept separate, you find these reasons to fall in love,” he elaborated. “If you are restricted from interacting from the beginning, told you can’t even be in the same school section, your mind creates these connections.”
Adding another funny example to the mix, Jitendra shared about a friend from his IIT Kharagpur days. Recounting an incident where a classmate’s laptop was stolen during a train journey, he revealed how his friend developed an enduring affection for her in the aftermath of the incident. Despite the passage of time, his friend remains steadfast in his love, unable to move on to the touching moment of vulnerability and despair. He said, “They were a group of ten, traveling together after the Diwali break. This girl had just gotten a new laptop, everyone was happy for her. But then, the next morning, she was devastated – the laptop was gone. ‘Woh roh rahi thi aur bas, aaj tak pyaar hai use, woh move on nahi kar paya’ (She was crying, and that was it for him. He’s still in love, hasn’t been able to move on).”
