Christmas rush, Cabs, autos barred from Elante circle

Chandigarh

The UT traffic police on Monday issued an advisory in view of Christmas celebrations, to take alternate routes to visit Elante Mall, Industrial Area, Phase-I, Chandigarh, on Tuesday and Wednesday.

To mitigate the traffic congestion around Elante Mall on Tuesday and Wednesday, the traffic police have decided to ban cabs and auto-rickshaws from entering the inner circle around Elante Mall.

According to traffic police, cabs and auto-rickshaw drivers have instead been provided an exclusive pick-up and drop area in front of the main entrance of Elante Mall using the link road approaching from Verka Milk Plant, Industrial Area Phase-1.

People who wish to use private transport have been advised to approach Elante Mall either from Hyatt Hotel or HDFC bank side as all other ways will be blocked keeping in view the heavy rush during the festive season. The police have advised others to avoid using Purv Marg (between Tribune Chowk to Transport Chowk) and Udyog Path (between ISBT Sector 17 Chowk to ITI light point).

Those going to railway station on these two days are advised to take Madhya Marg route only.

Besides this, in view of the anticipated heavy traffic movement, the traffic police appealed the public to try to walk to nearby markets, nearby destinations, etc. rather than using a motor vehicle. The police advised to avoid travelling during peak hours as much as possible, so that traffic on the roads and parking lots is staggered out.

They said that vehicles should be parked only at designated parking lots not consuming more space than necessary. People are advised not to park their vehicles in ‘no parking’ zones/roads, otherwise, such vehicles will be towed away/clamped. People are also advised not to park/ply their vehicles on cycle tracks/pedestrian pathways. In case vehicle is towed away/clamped, contact traffic helpline number 1073.

In case of traffic congestion, do not honk unnecessarily, said the traffic police in their statement. Inconvenience caused to the general public on account of these restrictions is regretted.

DSP Charanjit Singh, said, “The UT traffic police is making efforts to mitigate traffic congestion in view of Christmas. We seek the public’s active co-operation to make the celebrations more peaceful.”
