If you are a resident of Chandigarh and if ever thought that police has been quick to response to your situation of emergency, then you would glad to know that Chandigarh Police Department is setting national standard for response times, emerging as undisputed champion in a recent report
In a study conducted by Computer Aided Dispatch(CAD) systems, police response time across various Indian States and Union Territories was examined over a period of 8 months in 2023, where Chandigarh Police emerged as champions with an average response time of 7.03 minutes. From the moment an emergency call hits the Police Control room (PCR) to the time the police arrives at the scene, Chandigarh Police takes mere 7.03 minutes on average.
That’s not all folks! For Chandigarh lightning fast responses aren’t just a one time thing, police officials revealed that in February 2023, even a better response time of 5.34 minutes was observed. This dedication of the Police response is truly commendable.
This all was made possible only by strategic investments and a commitment to modernization of the Chandigarh Police Department and administration. Last year, the department revamped its PCR fleet, 25 brand new TATA Safari SUVs were added to the fleet while ditching their old Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. These new SUVs are fitted with cutting-edge technology, allowing better tracking, faster response, and well-equipped force to tackle any situation.
Even in May 2023 the average response time was 5.56 and in August 2023 it climbed slightly to 6.03 minutes. But since December 2023, the average response time has consistently been below the 6-minute mark. Just this January, an incredible average time of 5.33 minutes was noted by the Chandigarh Police.
With Chandigarh Police claiming the first position on this date, Ponducherry came second with a response time of 7.11 minutes, which may not seem enough but in emergencies can be a difference between life and death. This is followed by Tamil Nadu with an average response time of 8 minutes. UP Police and Delhi Police gave a stiff competition for the fourth place with an average time response timing of 9.82 & 9.86 minutes respectively. However, Punjab Police found itself on the very opposite of fastest responses with a response time of 25.25 minutes, which is 3 times slower than Chandigarh Police.
UT senior superintendent of Police Knwardeep Kaur emphasized on the role of technology, explaining how PCR vehicles are equipped with GPS trackers and mobile display terminals (MDT) screens. Through this dispatchers are able to pinpoint each patrol car ensuring closest one to reach the spot, even the officers are required to electronically “Punch in” the exact arrival of time.
Police officials at the control room also shared stories how these quick responses led to successful case resolutions. In one instance, a six-year-old child who went missing in Ram Darbar was located within minutes of an emergency call being received. In another case, a mobile mobile snatcher was apprehended because of a quick police response with PCR van intercepting the fleeing suspect. These are just a few examples of how swift action can make a real difference in people’s lives.
