Chandigarh Panel Approves PU’s South Campus Expansion Plan

The Chandigarh Heritage Conservation Committee (CHCC) on Thursday granted approval to the Master Plan for the expansion of Panjab University’s (PU) south campus, along with the “Street for People” initiative in Sector 15. The decision was made during a meeting chaired by UT Adviser Rajeev Verma, who praised the university for its comprehensive and uniform approach, ensuring that the expansion aligns with the historical significance of the institution.

The meeting, held under Verma’s leadership, also included discussions on various other significant projects. The chief architect provided a detailed overview of the CHCC’s genesis, constitution, and mandate before the committee members reviewed the proposed developments.

Among the key topics discussed were the management of the Capitol Complex and the review of several projects, including the Martyrs Memorial. The Capitol Complex management plan includes a holistic development strategy for the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which was a focus during the extended 45th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Riyadh in 2023.

Specific proposals under consideration include the expansion of a building adjacent to the security personnel building near the Open Hand monument, construction of an additional floor on the existing lawyer chambers, and the installation of iron grill fencing around the perimeter of the High Court building. Additionally, plans for segregating court premises into low and high-security zones, clearing debris at the Martyrs Memorial, and providing a covered verandah in front of courtroom number 1 of the Chief Justice Court, similar to those in front of courtrooms 2 to 9, were also discussed.

The meeting also addressed future plans for the Habitat Centre and business centre in Sector 17, with Verma emphasizing the need for strict adherence to the Centre’s guidelines and planning management during the execution of these projects.
