Chandigarh: Organ Donation from Brain-Dead Toddler Saves 26-Year-Old Woman

In a most exceptional act of kindness, the body parts of a three-year-old child whose brain was dead were utilized in the preservation of a 26-year-old woman’s health. Kanchan, who came from Kaimbwala was admitted into Government Multi Speciality Hospital (GMSH-16) on July 28 and later referred to PGIMER. Despite the greatest efforts of medical personnel, Kanchan was declared brain dead on August 6 following a thorough evaluation by the brain stem death committee.

Kanchan’s father, Lal Singh, made a touching decision to donate his daughter’s organs. In this manner, both of Kanchan’s kidneys were successfully transplanted into a 26-year-old woman who would then have another chance at life. The transplantation procedure underwent supervision by PGIMER specialists and included detailed laboratory techniques and interdepartmental coordination for obtaining a successful operation.

Dr. Vipin Koushal, Medical Superintendent at PGIMER and nodal official for the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO), praised the family’s decision. “The courage and compassion demonstrated by Kanchan’s family during such a difficult period is amazing. Their decision emphasises the enormous importance of organ donation and its life-saving potential.”

Lal Singh expressed his family’s pain while also hoping that Kanchan’s decision to give her organs would inspire others to do the same. “The loss of Kanchan has been extremely heartbreaking, but knowing that her organs have given someone else a shot at life brings some comfort. We hope our selection may influence others towards donating their organs.”

This story on organ donation shows how acts of kindness can transform lives by offering them a new lease on life and hope when they need it most.
