The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) reconvened on Friday, June 8th, 2024, after the model code of conduct was lifted, and addressed various city improvement initiatives. Here’s a summary of the key decisions:
Combating the Monkey Menace
A major concern addressed by the MC was the ongoing issue with monkeys creating disturbances in the city. To tackle this problem, they resolved to extend the services of the current manpower deployed for monkey control. This extension comes at an annual cost of ₹12 lakh.
Land Lease and Revenue Generation
The committee proposed an agenda for the upcoming General House meeting. This agenda outlines an open auction for leasing out agricultural land for a period of one year in villages under the MC’s jurisdiction. These villages include Chahar Taraf Burail, Khuda Lahora, Khuda Alisher, and Dadumajra. The rent for these leased lands will see a 10% annual increase over the previous year’s rent.
Other Important Approvals
- The MC approved the procurement of two new water tankers at an estimated cost of ₹50 lakh. These tankers will be used for dust suppression, sanitation purposes, and supplying clean drinking water to animal shelters (gaushalas).
- The existing contracts of six dog catchers were extended.
Chandigarh’s Infrastructure Development
The civic body plans to improve the city’s infrastructure through various projects. These projects include:
- Repairing Phirni Road in Sarangpur village with paver blocks.
- Redeveloping the Bamboo Valley area, located behind the Children’s Traffic Park in Sector 23.
- Constructing a dedicated pedestrian pathway in Sector 43.
- Installing children’s play equipment and open-air gyms in various parks of Sector 27.
- Strengthening the city’s sewerage system.
- Applying thermoplastic paint on various roads under the MC’s control.
The General House meeting scheduled for June 11th is expected to discuss and finalize the proposals mentioned above.
