The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) has taken an important step toward guaranteeing a water supply that functions around the clock throughout the city by awarding a contract to P&R Infrastructure Limited for the renovation of the Kajauli waterworks. The contract worth ₹58.61 Crore is part of the larger pan city water supply project that seeks to provide an unbroken and continuous service of water to all residents into December 2025.
The MC had initially floated the tender for this crucial upgrade with an estimated budget of ₹67.5 crore. The project is divided into two parts: the upgrading of the Kajauli waterworks and the water supply component. The Kajauli waterworks, which now uses antiquated and inefficient pumps, will be completely overhauled under this effort.
The proposed modifications include replacing current pumps with energy-efficient versions, which will dramatically reduce energy use. The MC estimates that this transition would save around 181 kWh per pump set, resulting in an annual reduction of ₹5 crore in electricity expenditures alone. The whole pumping system will be monitored and managed by a cutting-edge Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) centre, assuring peak performance and dependability.
This move follows the successful launch of the 24×7 water supply project in Mani Majra, where residents now enjoy round-the-clock water service. The Kajauli upgrade is a critical component of the MC’s broader goal to extend this continuous, pressurized water supply to the entire city. The project aims to eliminate intermittent supply issues and ensure that water reaches even the third floor of every building with sufficient pressure.
While work on the Kajauli waterworks is slated to begin shortly, the Municipal Corporation is also drafting a tender for the project’s water supply component. The plans for soliciting bids on this phase are to be made known by October of this year, while the completion of the whole project is set for March 2029.
This program by the Municipal Corporation forms part of a larger initiative aimed at modernizing infrastructure and enhancing life standards for residents in Chandigarh. In an era where urban areas are growing quickly, it is very important to upgrade essential services like water supply so that they will be sustainable.
