In response to concerns over illegal water extraction, Municipal Corporation Comisisoner Anindita Mitra of Chandigarh has taken decisive action by suspending a Junior Engineer (JE) named Praveen Atri and a meter reader named Rajinder Singh. This action comes after authorities discovered a case of unauthorized groundwater extraction in Kajheri, a suburb of Chandigarh.
Concerns about illicit water extraction were aroused with the finding of a huge underground water tank in the Chandigarh neighbourhood of Kajheri. According to reports, Gurmeet Singh, a member of the Tiwana Water Tanker, pumped groundwater without permission and then sold it for Rs 600 per tanker on the commercial market. The water security of Chandigarh is put at risk by this illegal activity, particularly in the summertime and other periods when there is a shortage of water.
Commissioner Mitra’s decision to suspend the JE and meter reader suggests possible negligence or collusion in their official capacities. An unnamed Municipal Corporation official remarked,” It is inconceivable that such activities could have taken place in Kajheri without the knowledge of local officials.”
In addition to the suspension, the Municipal Corporation has lodged a formal complaint against Gurmeet Singh at Sector 36 police station. The complaint alleges illegal borewell construction and commercial water extraction, signalling the authority’s determination to shut down these kinds of operations.
