Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed Ravikant Sharma as its candidate for the post of Mayor, Mahesh Inder Singh as the Senior Deputy Mayor and Fermila as Deputy Mayor. All three candidates filed their nomination at four in the evening on Monday for the respective posts.
Meanwhile, the revolt in the saffron party has come out in the open as BJP councillor Chandrawati Shukla has filed nomination papers for Mayor post against BJP’s official candidate.
The mayoral elections are scheduled to be held on January 8. Whereas, Congress has selected councillor Devinder Singh Babla as its candidate for the Mayor’s seat, Ravinder Kaur Gujral as the party’s Senior Deputy Mayor candidate and councillor Satish Kainth will be contesting for the post of Deputy Mayor.
Ravikant Sharma is originally from Una, Himachal Pradesh, and joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad at Una College in 1984. He joined the BJP in 1996 in Chandigarh. Being close to Sanjay Tandon, he served as Divisional President from 2006 to 2009, General Secretary in 2012 and District President for six years thereafter.
Mahesh Inder Singh, who started his political career at Panjab University (PU), was the state executive of Yuva Morcha in 2006-07. After that, he was made State President while being State General Secretary. In 2013, along with Anurag Thakur, he joined the National Executive of Yuva Morcha.
