In a significant protest on Independence Day, Bathinda witnessed a city-wide bandh organized by various trade and social organizations against the multilevel parking contractor responsible for managing parking facilities in the area. The bandh was prompted by allegations of excessive harassment and unfair practices by the parking contractor, including towing vehicles parked within designated areas.
Trade and social groups, including the Naujawan Welfare Society led by President Sonu Maheshwari, accused the contractor’s employees of being excessively aggressive with tow vans, removing vehicles even if they were parked in approved spots and for brief periods. This aggressive towing practice has been reportedly causing significant inconvenience to local shopkeepers and customers alike. Shopkeepers have experienced a drop in foot traffic as potential customers avoid areas plagued by towing issues, while visitors are forced to park far from their destinations.
In response to these grievances, residents and business owners gathered at Fire Brigade Chowk near the parking facility to protest against the contractor’s actions. Despite repeated appeals to the municipal corporation, their concerns had not been addressed until the protest intensified. The demonstration led to a decisive outcome, with the district administration agreeing to cancel the parking contractor’s contract. The official announcement is expected to be made during the municipal corporation meeting scheduled for August 23.
Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal voiced strong support for the bandh and condemned the contractor’s conduct. She emphasized that while she supports the enforcement of parking rules and the towing of incorrectly parked vehicles, the contractor’s high handling was unacceptable. “The behaviour of the multilevel parking contractor is unjustifiable and will not be tolerated,” Badal stated.
On the other hand, the multilevel parking contractor, Ram Singh Virk, denied the accusations, describing them as baseless. He defended his actions by stating that only vehicles parked improperly are towed to ensure smooth traffic flow, dismissing the claims of wrongful towing.
The resolution to cancel the contract is seen as a victory for the protesters and reflects the administration’s responsiveness to public grievances. The situation highlights the need for fair management practices and improved communication between contractors and the community.
