Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) councillor Balwinder Kaur was elected as the new president of the Nayagaon Municipal Council on Monday. Contesting from Ward no 5, Balwinder Kaur has been elected for a period of 20 months.
The elections for the Nayagaon municipal council were held on February 14.
SAD had won 10 seats out of total 21, while Congress managed to get 6 seats, 3 seats went to BJP and two seats went to independents.
Balwinder Kaur was elected during the first meeting of the newly elected members of the House with the support of one BJP councillor Mamta Koshish from Ward No. 11 as the SAD needed support of 11 councillors. No election was held for the post of vice-president.
Though Congress councillors raised the demand for postponing the elections and even raised slogans, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Himanshu Jain, who was presiding over the meeting, conducted the elections. The Congress did not field its candidate.
Kharar MLA from Aam Aadmi party ( AAP), Kanwar Sandhu, was also present in the meeting.
