The elections for office-bearers of Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana were held today under the supervision of Learned Advocate General Baldev Raj Mahajan who was the returning officer as per rules. Ashok Singla elected as the New Chairman of Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana whereas Ranvir Singh Dhaka became the new Vice Chairman.
For the post of Chairman, Ashok Singla and Karanjit Singh were in fray, and for the post of Vice Chairman Ranvir Singh Dhaka and Hargobinder Singh Gill (Bagga). Total 27 votes were polled, and the counting was conducted in the presence of all Members.
Ashok Singla emerged victorious with 14 votes polled in his favour, whereas his contender Karanjit Singh secured 13 votes. Similarly, Ranvir Singh Dhaka secured 14 votes, and his contender Hargobinder Singh Gill (Bagga) secured 13 votes. All Members present congratulated the newly elected office-bearers of the State Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana. Noteworthy is that Raj Kumar Chauhaan was already chosen as the Honorary Secretary on July 2nd.
Ashok Singla and Ranvir Singh Dhaka thanked the outgoing Chairman Suvir Sidhu and Gurtej Singh Grewal Honorary Secretary for their exemplary services towards the Institution.
Ashok Singla, who has earlier served as Honorary Secretary in 2005-06 and then the Vice Chairman in 2022-23. Ashok Singla belongs to Sangrur and his father was also a renowned lawyer of Distt. Sangrur.
The State Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana is a statutory body established under the Advocates Act, of 1961. It has 25 elected members who are elected by way of a preferential voting system for the states of Punjab, Haryana and U.T. Chandigarh by enrolled advocates. Advocate General for the states of Punjab and Haryana, both, are ex-officio members. Partap Singh was elected unopposed in 2019 as a Member representative for the State of Punjab and Haryana in the Bar Council of India. The Bar Council of India which is the apex body of Advocates in India.
