Army chief General MM Naravane reached Leh on Thursday as part of a two-day visit to review the security situation in the Ladakh region.
Gen Naravane will carry out a comprehensive review given China’s fresh attempts to change status quo along the southern bank of Pangong lake, official sources said. He will be briefed by the senior field commanders on the ground situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), sources added.
According to sources, the Army Chief will also review the operational preparedness of the troops who are locked in a standoff with Chinese troops for over three months now.
Tension escalated in the Pangong lake area after China unsuccessfully attempted to occupy certain areas in the southern bank of Pangong lake on the intervening night of August 29-30, following which India rushed in additional troops and weapons to the sensitive region.
On August 1, Indian security forces foiled an attempt by the Chinese Army to transgress into the Indian side of the LAC in the general area of Chumar in Eastern Ladakh.
External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava on Tuesday said the Chinese People’s Liberation Army(PLA) was engaged in “provocative action” again a day earlier when the ground commanders of the two sides were holding talks to ease the situation. India and China are engaged in a standoff since April-May. The situation worsened after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in clashes with Chinese troops in Galwan valley in June.
