PU Alumnus Anup Chandra Pandey Appointed Election Commissioner of India

President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday appointed of Anup Chandra Pandey, a retired Uttar Pradesh cadre IAS officer, to the post of Election Commissioner.

Pandey, a 1984 batch IAS, served as the former chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh.

Following the elevation of Sushil Chandra as the Chief Election Commissioner in April, the position of an Election Commisioner was vacant since April 13.

“Under his administrative leadership as Chief Secretary, the State successfully organised the Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj and Paravasi Bhartiya at Varnasi Diwas in 2019,” the statement read.

Anup Chandra Pandey had served in the Defence and Labour and Employment Ministries. “Mr Pandey has a keen interest in writing and has authored a book titled Governance in Ancient India, which explores the evolution, nature, scope, functions and all related aspects of ancient Indian Civil Service from the Rig Veda period to 650 AD,” the ECI said.

“It is a moment of pride for Panjab University (PU) that it’s alumnus from University Business School and former Chief Secretary UP, Anup Chandra Pandey, a retired IAS, has been appointed as the Election Commissioner of India,” expressed Prof Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor.

“Prof V C Pandey, father of Anup Pandey was a senior professor in PU in Department of Ancient History. He lived on campus for many years,” he added.
