Dr Anupma Gupta, one of the six victims injured in a vehicle pile-up near Bandala village on the Amritsar-Bathinda highway on Tuesday, is battling for her life at a local private hospital. Doctors had to amputate her legs to save her life.Dr Anupma, head of the Anatomy Department at Dashmesh Dental College, Faridkot, and her colleague were on their way to the college when she spotted the pile-up of vehicles.
Wasting no time, she immediately asked her colleague to pull over.
She alighted from the car and rushed to the injured persons.
As she was trying to open a mangled door of one of the cars involved the pile-up, a truck coming from the rear hit her, leaving her unconscious.
She was taken to hospital in Tarn Taran. Later, in view of her critical condition, she was shifted to hospital in Amritsar.
Though she was shifted to the hospital immediately, there was much loss of blood. A spokesperson for the private hospital, where she is under treatment, said her condition was critical and she was on the life support system.
The incident has shocked local residents, who are expressing solidarity with Dr Anupma and her family, whose lives have been changed forever due to the accident. Many took to social media, admiring her courage and praying for her recovery. At the same time, the incident has brought the plight of commuters on roads, especially in foggy days, to the fore.
