Amarjit Singh Sidhu is new Mohali mayor

Amarjit Singh Sidhu was elected mayor of the Mohali Municipal Corporation after the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected councillors at MC Bhawan in Mohali on Monday (April 12).

Amrik Singh Somal has been elected senior deputy mayor and Kuljeet Bedi is the deputy mayor for the Mohali MC. Notably, mayor Amarjit Singh Sidhu is the brother of Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu.

Balbir Singh Sidhu announced that Amarjit Singh Sidhu has been elected as a mayor for half term of the MC (2.5 years). In the second half, Rishav Jain will be the mayor of Mohali. Similarly for the senior deputy mayor, Amrik Singh Somal has been elected for the first 2.5 years. After that, Narpinder Singh Rangi will be the senior deputy mayor of city. Kuljeet Bedi will remain the deputy mayor for the full tenure.


Meanwhile, expressing their resentment, Congress councillor and former senior deputy mayor Rishav Jain and wife Rajrani Jain (also councillor) and councillors of Azad Group of former mayor Kulwant Singh boycotted the ceremony after taking the oath.

During the voting on February 14, Paramjit Singh Kahlon had filed a case against Amarjit Singh Sidhu for “rigging the polls” in Ward 10 during the MC election. Thereafter, the court had ordered re-polling in Ward 10 on February 17.
