The Chandigarh branch of the Indian Red Cross Society, has developed a specialized corner for senior citizens “PLAZA BAITHAK” at Sector 17, Plaza City Center which was inaugurated by Sh. Dharampal, Adviser to the Administrator in the presence of Sh. Mandip Brar, Deputy Commissioner Chandigarh.
This was much needed project, as dedicated place was required in the city, where the elderly people from diverse backgrounds could meet and interact comfortably. The main idea behind setting up this Special Corner at Plaza City Centre is to make the elders feel important & give them a special place to relax for a while. There is a makeshift seating arrangement for around 20-25 people, along with provision of daily newspaper, few magazines and some indoor games like chess and carrom. Some physiotherapy modalities too are being provided, for safe and effective physical activity.
The timings will be between 11am to 7pm which has been decided to align with timings of Sector 17 market. This is the space where the seniors can spend some quality time with their peer group & can socialize in eco friendly environment. They can sit, read and enjoy in the plaza. The Seniors can enjoy the vibrant and pleasant atmosphere of the popular sector 17, market and at the same time interact with each other. This project may create an awareness among the youth of City beautiful about responsibilities towards our elders, and may come up the better ideas to reverse the segregation of seniors from the younger population.
Mr. Khandelia from Khandelia Oil Mills who is also the Vice President of Chandigarh Red Cross Society, and Chandigarh Business Council has contributed in different ways to bring this project to life.
